Telogen Effluvium / Diffuse Alopecia
Normally, about 80–90% of hair is in the active growth phase (anagen phase), while the rest is in the telogen (resting) phase.
In telogen effluvium, a large number of hairs suddenly and simultaneously enter this resting phase and fall out. It most commonly affects the middle area of the scalp.
Patients usually do not lose all their hair, but it becomes diffusely thin and weak, and the scalp often becomes clearly visible. Typically, hair loss is noticeable in the frontal temporal area (similar to male-pattern hair loss), and patients often report that their ponytail has lost volume.
Hair follicles are not permanently damaged—there is simply a much higher number of them in the resting phase than normal. Therefore, the earlier the therapy begins, the better the chances to slow down or stop hair loss and return hairs to the active growth phase.
Acute form: Hair loss occurs suddenly, and the majority of the hair is lost within the first two months after the onset of telogen effluvium.
Chronic form: Hair falls out gradually, enters the resting phase more slowly, and shedding persists for about 6–8 months before stabilizing.
